The Late Development Project Management (PM) Therapeutic Area Head (TAH) leads a group of individual contributor PMs in their assigned therapeutic area.
The PM TAH oversees the cross-functional planning and execution of the portfolio of assets within the TA, including definition of the operational strategy, management of timelines, risk assessments and mitigations, costs, and quality.
The PM TAH coaches and mentors the individual contributor PMs, helps them to develop and grow in their role as a PM, and supports their long-term development goals.
The PM TAH is a member of the PM Leadership Team across early and late development, tasked with building an industry-leading PM team empowered to deliver on the BMS commitment to transform patients' lives through science.
As part of the R&D Strategy and Planning organization, PM TA heads are extended leadership team members and, as such, may interact broadly with stakeholders across the BMS enterprise up to and including the BMS executive leadership team.
In addition to the functional responsibilities within PM, the late development PM TAH works in close collaboration with Hematology Therapeutic Area leadership - contributing to the TA strategy and driving operations for the portfolio.
The PM TAH serves as a member on cross-functional Leadership Teams within the TA, including leading both operationally and strategically focused conversations and/or forums.
In addition, the PM TAH will collaborate with the Development and Commercial TA Heads in Hematology to manage the TA portfolio, including communicating the status of the portfolio to TA membership, delivering portfolio insights in partnership with functional area TA leads, and escalating issues to the appropriate stakeholders.
Roles &
Responsibilities:
Supports the Head of Late Development Project Management in this strategic leadership position with PM responsibility for a portfolio of hematology projects with remit for both development and marketed products May serve as the delegate for the Head of Late Development PM when needed Takes on PM functional leadership tasks which are PM staff facing (e.
g.
, assigning learning curriculum) Efficiently leads a team of individual contributor PMs (between 5-15 team members) supporting the assets within the Hematology Therapeutic Area in Late Development - post-proof of concept through commercial launch and lifecycle management, including late lifecycle; Has oversight of the full portfolio of assets within the Hematology Therapeutic Area managed by his/her PM staff, including cross-functional planning and execution of the assets within the Heme TA:
definition of the operational strategy, management of timelines, risk assessment and mitigation, costs, and quality to secure approval of new drugs or approvals for expanded indications across product portfolio Maintains oversight of the portfolio and proactively identifies and escalates systemic issues which require TA, portfolio, or enterprise-level action Leads communications of portfolio status, risks and mitigations and changes to scope, timelines and budget at appropriate TA and Enterprise level cross-functional forums; May serve as PM for such forums Influences and imparts broad expertise regarding US and international drug development planning and execution.
Provides strategic and operational advice to the development and commercialization therapeutic area leadership teams Demonstrates executive leadership presence and models the leader mindset with focus on continuous learning and solution orientation Demonstrates extreme agility by being able to readily pivot to support new therapeutic areas, multiple therapeutic areas, and/or manage diversity in project type with skill and ease Is internally and/or externally recognized as a Project Management Expert, with solid understanding of one or more disease areas with the ability to participate in and lead strategic discussions Responsible for recruiting, hiring, retaining, and developing Project Management staff, building a diverse organization which is open to new ideas, and enables success for colleagues of different backgrounds and experiences; Leads, mentors, and guides development of talent, which includes succession and development planning, performance management, and recognition for the Project Management team in the assigned TA Works in close collaboration with TA leadership - contributing to the TA strategy and driving operations for the portfolio within their assigned therapeutic area Provides leadership and guidance to senior executives on operational project matters pertaining to their assigned TA to improve the effectiveness of project strategies in order to bring new products to submission and approval in the most expeditious manner Directs due diligence activities related to project planning and directs activities associated with external alliances Acts as a Change Agent for continuous improvement and transformational initiatives within PM and RDSP Demonstrates leadership skills including enterprise mindset, situational leadership, ability to lead a team of experts, and influence without authority Recognized and relied upon as a strategic operational leader by TA and cross-functional stakeholders; embodies the ideal PM behaviors and competencies and serves as a role model for project managers Ensures PM deliverables to the cyclical corporate processes are available and accurate to ensure effective decision making in various processes e.

Has oversight to ensure accuracy of the project data for their portfolio in source systems related to timelines Communicates the PM/RDSP vision to TA and vice versa; similarly informs of relevant changes to processes or ways or working to ensure alignment and transparency of expectations Coaches and mentors individual contributor PMs to drive excellence and accountability; sets direction for expectations of the role Advises on governance expectations and helps PMs prepare effectively for key decision point discussions and senior leadership interactions Shares insights with their team of PMs to enable understanding of the enterprise/portfolio perspective as it applies to their individual programs Actively partners with PM function (as a member of the PM Leadership Team) and key stakeholders to improve ways of working within BMS to deliver on the pipeline commitment and build an industry-leading PM team, up to and including leadership of enterprise level initiatives Requirements:
Advanced degree (MS/Ph.
D.
preferred) in Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, or other relevant discipline.
In addition, MBA or PMP certification is desirable.
Minimum of 15 years of experience in biotech/pharmaceutical industry, including 10 years in project/portfolio management.
Demonstrated ability to build and lead matrix teams; knows how to work at the strategic level and when to delve deeper to resolve issues and challenges Experience in drug development project management at both the individual project level and across a portfolio of projects Experience as a people manager who has strong talent development skills (4
